Disaster Assistance and Recovery Information

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:


1. IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE, FILE A CLAIM.

2. CHECK IF YOUR COUNTY WAS DECLARED FOR DISASTER ASSISTANCE:

Alabama:

Baldwin, Mobile, and Washington Counties.

Louisiana:

The parishes of Acadia, Ascension, Assumption, Calcasieu, Cameron, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberia, Iberville, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans, Pointe Coupee, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, St. Martin, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, Vermilion, Washington, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana.

Mississippi:

Amite, Forrest, George, Greene, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Lamar, Marion, Pearl River, Perry, Pike, Stone, Walthall, and Wilkinson Counties.


3. LEARN ABOUT THE FEMA DISASTER ASSISTANCE PROCESS FOR INDIVIDUALS AND HOUSEHOLDS:

FEMA provides temporary housing, home repair, home replacement, and other needs,including medical, dental, funeral, personal property, transportation, moving and storage, and other expenses authorized under the law.

    • Register online on the FEMA Web site.
    • Register via telephone toll free at 1 (800) 621-FEMA (3362)
    • Register using TTY 800-462-7585

      Be prepared to give your Social Security number, describe your losses (include the damaged property’s address and directions to get there), provide your financial and income information, provide information about insurance coverage you may have, and give your current contact information.  If you get a busy signal, try to call in the evening after 6:00 p.m. or on the weekends when call volumes tend to be lighter, or visit the website.

      The registrar will give you an application number when you apply.  Hold on to this number!


4.     SEE IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT FOR DISLOCATED WORKERS.

5.     SEE WHAT OTHER GOVERNMENT BENEFITS ARE AVAILABLE:

Michigan’s Department of Human Services can give you information and help you apply for Food Stamps, cash assistance, Medicaid, and other programs.

To locate free or low cost legal assistance:

  • Visit the Michiganlegalaid.org home page and search for local assistance by entering your zip code in the box marked “Find a lawyer, organization or related service to help you with your problem.” or

  • Look under "attorneys" in the yellow pages to find your local legal aid office, or

  • Contact the Michigan State Bar Lawyer Referral Service at (800) 968- 0738. 

  • Persons age 60 or older, regardless of their income, may be able to receive free advice from the Legal Hotline for Michigan Seniors by calling (800) 347-5297.
